  • MoneyHero.com.hk's press release about medical insurance in Hong KongThe advice is clear, purchase medical insurance when you are young and healthy, do not wait until later on in life. Too many Hong Kongers wait until they start needing medical treatment, pushing up the price of their premiums by up to 700%.
  • Chronic Diseases patients overwhelm the Hong Kong Public Health Services. More than 870,000 people with chronic diseases have follow-up consultations in public hospitals or clinics, accounting for around 80% of the total number of patients with chronic diseases.
  • 7% of the population of Hong Kong are not covered by any medical insurance plans. For individuals who age 65 and above, this number alarmingly rises to 88.5%.

Why Medical Insurance is needed now more than ever before.

The number of individuals diagnosed with chronic diseases in Hong Kong is continuously on the rise. Many patients cannot receive the necessary medical treatment due to the long waiting times associated with follow-up consultations.

According to data recently released by the Census and Statistics Department, the number of patients with chronic diseases attending follow-up consultations accounts for 21.6% of the total number of doctor consultations in Hong Kong. More than 870,000 patients only attend follow-up consultations in public hospitals or clinics, accounting for approximately 80% of the total number of patients with chronic diseases. In addition, 130,000 of them do not attend follow-up consultations on a regular basis.

If this trend continues, this will impose a heavy burden on public health services and ultimately the health and welfare of Hong Kongers. With only 11.5% of the Hong Kong population over the age of 65 having medical insurance, change is needed if the future health system is to survive. The elusive Voluntary Health Insurance scheme is still yet to be launched.
