Asia Miles Credit Card Earning Guide 2026: With Latest Redemption Chart

Since January 1, 2020, Asia Miles members who earn or redeem miles at least once every 18 months will automatically extend their miles' validity for another 18 months. This effectively allows for 'perpetual' accumulation without expiration concerns, provided you maintain account activity.

This policy change eliminates the previous pressure to use miles before they expired, giving members much more flexibility in planning their redemptions and building larger mile balances for premium cabin travel.

3 / Cathay Flights: Miles for Japan Routes Increased; Long-haul Routes Decreased

Effective April 15, 2025, Asia Miles implemented award chart adjustments for members to check for redemption. Economy class tickets to Japan increased from 20,000 miles round-trip to 25,000 miles, while popular short-haul destinations like Seoul, Singapore, and Taiwan remained unchanged.

On the positive side, long-haul economy routes saw reductions. Round-trip flights to London decreased from 60,000 to 54,000 miles, while Sydney and Melbourne dropped from 44,000 to 40,000 miles.

However, business-class awards generally increased across the board, with routes to Japan, London, New York, Sydney, and Los Angeles seeing increases of 2,000 to 30,000 miles. This makes business class redemptions more challenging for members.

4 / Partner Airlines: General Increase in Required Miles

Partner airline awards saw widespread increases. Popular economy cabin redemptions now require more miles:

The message is clear: Cathay Pacific wants members to redeem on its own flights. 5 / One-Way Tickets: Greater Flexibility

One-way ticket redemptions became more flexible under the new structure. Previously, one-way tickets required two-thirds of the round-trip miles. Now, most one-way redemptions cost exactly half of the round-trip amount, allowing members to freely mix cabin classes and destinations with greater convenience.

Great news for members who struggle to find available award seats! Asia Miles announced that Cathay Pacific's award seat inventory has increased by over 20%, significantly improving your chances of securing desired flights. This expansion makes it easier to use your hard-earned miles for actual travel.

7 / Impact on Open-Jaw Itineraries

Since all award tickets now calculate as one-way journeys, and return flights to the point of origin no longer apply, the traditional Open-Jaw strategy using 2 Stopovers + 2 Transits + 1 Open-Jaw to book two trips is no longer viable.

However, members can still create their own Open-Jaw itineraries. For example, flying to Tokyo and returning from Osaka costs the same 20,000 miles as a standard round-trip to either city. The new system functions similarly to the Avios program in this respect.

8 / Earning Miles: New Calculation Method

The miles-earning calculation shifted from purely distance-based to a formula that incorporates cabin class, fare bucket (sub-class), and flight distance. Over 80% of Cathay Pacific flights now earn more miles under this system.

For example, previously flying to Taiwan in Economy Y Class earned only 501 miles; now it earns 650 miles. A Tokyo flight in S Class that previously earned 460 miles now awards 1,000 miles, representing substantial improvements for most travellers.

9 / Miles Plus Cash: Faster Way to Flight Rewards

Since March 30, 2021, members can book tickets through the Cathay Pacific website using 'Miles Plus Cash' payment. This option requires as few as 5,000 miles combined with cash to purchase tickets. No more worrying about insufficient miles going to waste. Tickets purchased with Miles Plus Cash still earn both miles and Status Points, making this feature particularly valuable.

10 / Marriott Bonvoy and Cathay Membership Status Match Details

Cathay membership programme partners with Marriott Bonvoy, enabling ongoing points conversion to earn and redeem Asia Miles. 

Marriott Bonvoy members can transfer points to Asia Miles at a 3:1 ratio (3 Marriott points = 1 Asia Mile), with a bonus of 5,000 Asia Miles for every 60,000 points transferred, improving the effective rate. Reverse transfers from Asia Miles to Marriott points are at a 1:1 ratio.
