Thailand Travel Insurance Covid-Related Coverage FAQ

1. What kind of coverage can I get from travel insurance if I got infected with Covid while travelling in Thailand?

Most travel insurance plans cover the insured persons' overseas medical expenses if they got infected overseas. Travellers are suggested to ask for medical help at local hospitals if they contracted the virus. They should properly keep the related documents, such as infection proof, medical reports and receipts, to ensure a successful insurance claim after returning to Hong Kong.

2. Is it a must show a Covid vaccination record and get travel insurance with Covid coverage before departing for Thailand?

It is no longer a must for travellers to show a Covid vaccination record and get travel insurance with Covid coverage before boarding a departure flight to Thailand since the Thai government lifted the requirements in January 2023.

3. What items should I compare before getting a travel insurance for a trip to Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Pattaya?

Although the pandemic situation in Thailand seems to have slowed down, there are still infection risks. Travellers are suggested to pay attention to the types of Covid-related insured items in the policy wordings, such as medical expenses, trip cancellation, delay or curtailment. They should also compare the maximum limits of coverage on flight delay and travel inconvenience in case of adverse weather conditions. If they are planning to participate in high-risk activities during the trip, such as scuba diving and skydiving, they should check if such events are covered by their selected travel insurance plans.

4. How to make a travel insurance claim?

The first thing to bear in mind is the deadline for claim filings. Insurance companies usually only accept claim applications that are filed within 21 to 31 days after the incident. Whichever insurance companies you are applying to, you must keep and submit all the relevant supporting documents obtained at your travel destination or from a local authority or institution, such as police reports for lost or stolen items and medical receipts, in order to ensure a successful claim.
