💳 What Credit Cards are available in Hong Kong?
In Hong Kong, you can get and use credit cards from common card brands such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express and UnionPay. Do beware that while Visa and Mastercard are commonly accepted, there may be smaller merchants who may not accept American Express cards.
💳 What do I need to apply for a credit card in Hong Kong?
Most banks, such as Citibank, Standard Chartered and HSBC, in Hong Kong issue Credit Cards for cashback and airmiles rebate. To apply for a credit card in Hong Kong, you will need to provide proof of income and address. Your bank may also offer you a credit card when you open a bank account.
💲 Should I choose cashback or airmiles?
It depends on what you would like your credit card to do for you. If you would like to have your credit card fund your next round trip ticket to Japan, an airmiles card might be the one for you. If you love the idea of having cashback to offset your monthly spending, a cashback card is for you. Some cards offer rebates in reward points that could be redeemed for statement credits, airmiles or even gifts.
Hang Seng MMPOWER Card
Hang Seng's MMPOWER Card gives users great flexibility on what categories they would like to maximise their cashback on. Other than the always-on 5% +FUN Dollar rebate on Online Shopping spending, cardholders can register for the "Everyday +FUN Dollars spending programme" and get up to 5.4% rebate on 2 of their chosen spending categories out of the below 5:
- Mobile Payment
- Dining (dine-in and takeaway spending at restaurant outlets)
- Travel and foreign currency (hotels, airlines, travel agencies and more )
- Electronics
- Entertainment (video and music streaming platforms, local cinemas in Hong Kong, local theme parks, Cityline ticket spending, and more)
+Fun Dollars can be redeemed through selected merchants such as Wellcome and Uniqlo, instantly reducing your transaction amount at the checkout. From July 2023 on, you can also use +FUN dollars to pay your credit card balance.
Citi's Cash Back Card is one for those who crave a no-fuss card. The card boasts 1% cashback on all local spending and a 2% rebate on all local dining, local hotel spending. It's worth noting that there's also a 2% rebate available for all foreign transactions, which effectively counters any foreign transaction fee charges!
The cashback is automatically credited to your statement once the amount accumulates to HK$200, a perfect no-brainer.
Standard Chartered's Smart Credit Card boasts 5% rebate for selected merchant spending, which includes ParkNShop, Watsons, Deliveroo and Netflix, getting the most bang for your buck in your daily spending.
One of its best features, will no doubt be its welcome offer. All new Standard Chartered Credit Card customers upon spending HK$4,000 of eligible transactions, could get HK$1,200 cashback. That's a 30% rebate! There are even more rewards if you apply through MoneyHero.
The card does not charge fees, there are no foreign exchange fees, annual fees or cash advance fees. What's also free is a 3-month instalment plan for any retail spending over HK$500 but do beware that the bank will deduct HK$1 CashBack from the reward redemption platform for every HK$180 instalment amount applied.
The Standard Chartered Cathay Mastercard is one of the best miles cards in Hong Kong. Co-branded with Cathay Pacific, the card offers direct rebates in Asia Miles. The rebate rate is HK$4/mile for dining, online and overseas spending and HK$6/mile for other spending. Don't forget the whooping HK$2/mile whenever you spend on Cathay and HK Express. With its generous welcome offer, you only have to spend HK$5,000 to get 15,000 miles, which could get you round-trip tickets to Taipei.
If you can swing the HK$4,000 or HK$8,000 annual fee, or be a Priority Banking/Priority Private banking client respectively with Standard Chartered, consider getting the higher-tiered cards and get premium treatment at the airport! The higher tier cards get you priority check-in at Cathay premium counters and exclusive Cathay Pacific Business class lounge passes that are sharable with you're loved ones and upgrade your trip with airport lounge visit to rest up before your flight.
HSBC's newest addition to the miles card market is the HSBC EveryMile Credit Card. It boasts a HK$2/mile rate for selected merchants that cover a wide base, spanning from covering your everyday caffeine fix (Starbucks, Pacific Coffee, Pret a Manger, NOC) to your online subscriptions (Netflix, Spotify, Disney+). On other spending, you will be earning miles at HK$5/mile.
What is extra special about this card is that when you put your travel spending (plane ticket and or hotel booking transaction) on the card, you are automatically protected by its free travel insurance. Cardholders are also entitled to 6 Plaza Premium Lounge visits per year. If there's not enough time to properly enjoy the lounge, you can also use the visit quotas to redeem food and beverage at selected dining outlets.
Like all HSBC cards, EveryMile offers rebates in Reward Cash, which could be redeemed through the Reward+ cash as statement credits, 12 types of different airmiles or physical gifts.
The Citi PremierMiles Card offers up to 12 types of different membership rewards. Cardholders can get as low as HK$3/mile on foreign transactions (upon spending more than HK$20k that month) and get HK$8/mile on local spending.
Cardholders can also access Plaza Premium Lounges 12 times per year (but make sure to make HK$5k spending on your card afterward!) and would be entitled to free travel insurance by putting their plane ticket or hotel charges on the card.
Citi PremierMiles offers its rewards in Citi Points, which never expire. The points can be redeemed as statement credits, 11 frequent flyer programme points and could even be redeemed for IHG hotel rewards without handling charge.
